The entrepreneurial ecosystem in Costa Rica: a necessary tool?

I have visited different entrepreneurial cities around the world, be it Boston, Tel Aviv, Madrid, Guatemala City, which have focused monetary, logistical and urban efforts to create a true entrepreneur-centered ecosystem.

The creation of an entrepreneurial ecosystem involves the creation of a branch and the connection of different relevant social actors. This for the creation and development of companies. Understand the involvement of academia, government entities, investors, business service managers and entrepreneurship specialists at a theoretical and practical level.

In discussing with certain thinkers of the entrepreneurial question in Central America, I consider that there is a general error of approach. Entrepreneurship support ecosystems are NOT for business creation and growth. They are tools to support the economic life of those who operate and provide technical knowledge and services to those who exist for motivated people seeking support.

The dilemma arises because the questions asked by the operators of the entrepreneurship support systems themselves are incorrect. We are faced with a situation equal to the question: How to create more Olympic medalists? The previous question is not a simple one, you cannot force people to be an athlete and neither can we pretend that with just training we will be competitive.

This is where I run into local thinkers who, from my perspective, confuse entrepreneurship and well-being. They continue to view entrepreneurship as a way to generate income for households and to mask the reality of the state’s material impossibility of creating jobs.

Let us be frank: the state has failed to create the conditions conducive to job creation. In addition, he believes that continuing to invest millions of dollars annually in a failing SME support system will make a difference. You can cheat multiple times, but you can’t cheat them all all the time.

– Acceptance of failure within the framework of the company

– Support for investing while taking risks

– Resilience

– Open to associative models

Because as an Olympic athlete, the best outdoor conditions can exist, but without the spirit of competition, no one will come for long.

Error: not starting from the institutional base

We must start by putting entrepreneurial support at the center of any support for businesses, we cannot continue from the institutional base. The Ministry of Economy, Industry and Trade has declined in recent years, having many legal powers to execute national mega-projects and implement real public policy.

But he advocates protecting the interests of rice and sugar producers instead of thinking of the entrepreneur. It currently has a decimated small and medium-sized enterprise directorate, with representatives who keep only a meager register of companies.

And this only serves to repeat the old rhetoric that must be formalized to be a good entrepreneur, as if such a thing generates profits for the market, the customer or the company itself.

A serious entrepreneurial ecosystem must set itself the goal of solving these problems:

– Lack of growth in local consumption

– Economic growth based on wages and not on capital

– Lack of credit for local businesses

– Lack of productive chains within the local market

– High operating and formalization costs

– Focus all of the above on the different profiles of entrepreneurs, whether they are self-employed, self-employed and entrepreneurs.

Time passes and is ruthless, our country has already lost eight years (or more honestly) of precious resources without really solving the local market situation: to create jobs and allow adequate business freedoms for the creation of wealth and jobs.
