IW School Board Meetings Move to Westside Elementary – Smithfield Times

Isle of Wight County School Board meetings will move permanently to the auditorium at Westside Elementary, effective immediately.

The school board voted unanimously, in the absence of Vice President Michael Cunningham, on April 21 to make the change. Previously, the school board had held its meetings in the boardroom at the Isle of Wight County Courthouse complex, located about halfway between the towns of Smithfield and Windsor.

While the change will result in slightly longer commute times for residents in the south end of the county – and shorter commutes for those in Smithfield and Carrollton – Speaker Denise Tynes said the lack of space in the hall meeting was becoming a problem.

“Some nights people couldn’t get in,” Tynes said.

Like the lecture hall, the Westside auditorium was outfitted with several flat-screen TVs and a projector so that all board members and the public could follow when school staff present. The move is also more convenient for school staff, Tynes said, as the Isle of Wight County Schools IT department is headquartered in Westside.
