American girl dragged her 8-year-old daughter behind a car

A California woman dragged her daughter 91 meters along the road as she clung to her car in an attempt to prevent her from driving while intoxicated, police said.

Late on September 16, Erin Garcia was drunk and trying to get away from her mother’s house in Placentia, Orange County, Calif. When her eight-year-old daughter ran to try and stop her, according to a statement from the Placentia police. The girl feared her mother would drive drunk, the report says.

The girl latched onto the car’s passenger door handle but was dragged alongside the vehicle for about 91 meters, scratching her legs and feet, the statement said. An adult male bystander and the girl’s grandmother attempted to intervene to get Garcia, 44, out of the car, but failed, according to police. The police statement goes on to describe Garcia trying to start and also dragging the spectator a short distance away.

Police said they later found Garcia hiding behind bushes in grandmother’s garden. Garcia kicked police when they tried to arrest him, the report said.

The girl and the bystander were both taken to hospital with moderate injuries, according to the report. Garcia, who lives in Laguna Niguel, Orange County, was taken to Orange County Jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, endangering children and bodily harm against an officer, according to the press release.

Garcia is due in court on Monday, according to CBSLA.
